A Hindi version of a standard back-pain disability questionnaire: is it accurate and reliable?

Validity and reliability of Hindi version of Oswestry Disability Index in Indian population

In simple words

The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is a standard questionnaire that measures how much back pain affects daily life. This study translated it into Hindi and tested whether the Hindi version is accurate and reliable.

What the study looked at

103 patients with low back pain at the spine clinic and physiotherapy department of Saifee Hospital completed the Hindi ODI with two other standard measures, a pain scale and the Roland-Morris questionnaire. 25 of them repeated it within two weeks.

What it found

The Hindi ODI was highly consistent (Cronbach's alpha 0.915) and gave almost identical results when repeated (ICC 0.99). Its scores matched well with the Roland-Morris questionnaire and the pain scale.

Why it matters for patients

A validated Hindi questionnaire lets doctors measure back-pain disability and treatment results accurately for Hindi-speaking patients.
