What restores the natural curve of the lower back after lateral fusion?

Factors influencing segmental lumbar lordosis after lateral transpsoas interbody fusion

In simple words

The lower back normally curves inwards. This study looked at what restores that curve when the spine is fused from the side.

What the study looked at

X-rays and CT scans of 29 patients (67 levels) before and after lateral transpsoas fusion, comparing spacer position, angle, height and patient factors.

What it found

The inward curve at fused levels increased by about 3.7° on average, most in levels that were flattest before surgery. The biggest factor was where the spacer sat. Placing it towards the front added about 7° per level, while placing it towards the back slightly reduced the curve.

Why it matters for patients

Careful spacer placement during surgery helps restore the natural shape of the lower back, which matters for posture and balance.
