Do expensive “premium” joint implants actually last longer?

Do “premium” joint implants add value? Analysis of high cost joint implants in a community registry

In simple words

Joint implants come at very different prices. This study asked whether more expensive 'premium' knee and hip implants last longer than standard ones.

What the study looked at

Records from a community joint-replacement registry: 3,462 standard and 2,806 premium knee replacements, and 868 standard and 1,311 premium hip replacements.

What it found

Premium implants cost about $1,000 more on average, but at 7 to 8 years there was no difference in how often knees or hips needed revision surgery. Infection and instability remained common reasons for revising knees.

Why it matters for patients

A higher price did not mean a longer-lasting implant over this period. Longer follow-up is needed, especially for younger patients.
