Lateral lumbar fusion with a side plate and screws on one side only: early results
Lateral transpsoas interbody fusion (LTIF) with plate fixation and unilateral pedicle screws: a preliminary report
In simple words
An early report on a lighter way of securing a lateral lumbar fusion: a small plate at the side plus screws on one side only, instead of both.
What the study looked at
13 patients who had lateral fusion with a side plate and one-sided screws, looking at surgery time, blood loss, hospital stay, pain and disability scores, and X-ray fusion.
What it found
No patient needed a blood transfusion, and the average stay was about 4.6 days. Pain and disability scores improved, and every patient with one-year scans had a solid fusion. Two patients had small fractures near the plate screws and a few had temporary thigh weakness or numbness.
Why it matters for patients
Less hardware can still give a solid fusion in suitable patients. The authors advise caution in people with weak (osteoporotic) bones.
